The Maresme resort towns

Between Barcelona and Blanes, the Maresme coast lines up a string of large beach hotels: Santa Susanna, Pineda de Mar, Malgrat de Mar and Calella. They are popular with British, Dutch and Scandinavian package travellers because rooms are good value and the beaches are long and flat. From Barcelona Airport, expect around 1 hour to 1 hour 15 minutes for the 75 to 85 km, using the C-32 motorway rather than the slow seafront N-II.

Why the transfer coach is not always the answer

Shared package coaches are cheap but they wait for every passenger on the flight and then drop off at eight or nine hotels in turn. A one-hour drive routinely becomes two and a half hours, and yours is often the last stop. A private transfer leaves when your group is ready and goes to your hotel only, which is why families with young children and anyone arriving after a long-haul connection tend to switch after the first holiday.

Hotel drop-offs and the railway line

The R1 railway runs right along this coast, and in several towns the hotels sit on the inland side of the tracks with pedestrian underpasses to the beach. Give us the hotel name and street when you book so the driver approaches from the correct side and you are not walking around with cases. Train travel from the airport is possible via Barcelona but involves two changes and about two hours.

Getting around once you are there

Lloret de Mar, Tossa de Mar and Blanes are all within half an hour north, and Barcelona is an hour back down the coast for a day in the city.
