Barcelona Airport to Girona: Transfer, Taxi and Train Compared
Distance, journey time and every way to travel from Barcelona Airport to Girona city — private transfer, taxi, high-speed train and bus, with practical booking advice.

How far is Girona from Barcelona Airport?
Girona city sits roughly 115 km north-east of Barcelona–El Prat, and the drive along the C-32 and AP-7 normally takes around 1 hour 30 minutes door to door. Traffic on the ring roads around Barcelona can add twenty minutes in the late afternoon, and the last stretch into the medieval centre is slow because much of the old town is pedestrianised. A private Barcelona airport transfer takes you as close to your hotel entrance as the traffic rules allow, which matters more in Girona than in most Catalan cities.
Train, bus, taxi or private transfer
There is no direct train from the airport. You first take Metro L9 Sud or the R2 Nord train into Barcelona, then change at Sants or Passeig de Gràcia for a regional train, or walk to Barcelona Sants for the high-speed AVE, which reaches Girona in 38 minutes but only after you have crossed the city with your luggage. Total realistic time from arrivals to a Girona hotel by public transport is two and a half to three hours. A metered taxi will do the journey but the fare is open-ended over that distance. A pre-booked private transfer is a single fixed price for the whole vehicle, agreed before you fly.
When the train still wins
If you are travelling light, arriving mid-morning and staying near Girona station, the AVE is fast and comfortable. Renfe publishes live timetables and fares on renfe.com, and prices change with demand, so check on the day you book.
Luggage, families and awkward arrival times
The train option assumes you can carry everything up and down station stairs twice. With two large suitcases per person, a pushchair, or an arrival after 22:00, the calculation changes completely. Our Comfort SUV takes four passengers and four large cases, and the Premium Minivan takes up to seven passengers and seven cases, so a family or small group travels together in one vehicle with the price fixed in advance.
What to see once you arrive
Girona rewards slow walking: the colourful Cases de l'Onyar, the Jewish Quarter, the Arab Baths and the widest Gothic nave in the world at the cathedral. Many visitors also use the city as a base for the northern Costa Brava, half an hour further east. The official tourism site, girona.cat/turisme, lists opening hours and seasonal events.
Booking your transfer
Send us your flight number, arrival time, hotel address and passenger count on WhatsApp and we confirm a fixed price for the whole car. We monitor the flight, so a delay does not cost you the booking, and the driver meets you inside arrivals with a name sign. Child seats can be added when you book. If you are flying into Girona Airport instead, our separate Girona and Reus airport guide covers that side of the journey.
