Girona and Reus Airport Transfers: The Complete Guide

Catalonia's two other airports

Barcelona–El Prat is not the only way into Catalonia. Girona–Costa Brava Airport, 100 km north of Barcelona, and Reus Airport, 100 km south, together handle several million passengers a year, most of them on low-cost and charter flights from the UK, Ireland, Germany, the Netherlands and Scandinavia. Both are small, quick to clear and pleasant to arrive at. Both also have thin public transport that is timed for the airport's convenience rather than yours, which is why a pre-booked Girona airport transfer or Reus airport transfer is the normal choice rather than the premium one.

Girona–Costa Brava Airport: fast in, slow out

Girona airport (GRO) has a single terminal, and on a quiet arrival you can be outside with your bag fifteen minutes after the wheels touch down. The problem starts there. Sagalés coaches to Barcelona and Lloret exist but are timed to the main daytime waves, the last useful departures leave before the final charter arrivals, and the taxi rank depends entirely on how many drivers judged the flight worth waiting for. Landing at Girona after midnight

Charter schedules put a surprising number of arrivals into GRO between 23:00 and 01:30, particularly in summer. At that hour the terminal empties within twenty minutes and there is no scheduled service to anywhere. A booked transfer is assigned to your flight number, so the driver is in the arrivals hall with your name whatever time the aircraft actually lands — 100 km to Barcelona in about 70 minutes, or 40 km to Lloret in 35. This is the single most common reason people contact us about Girona.

Reus Airport: the Costa Dorada gateway

Reus (REU) is the airport for Salou, Cambrils, La Pineda, Tarragona and PortAventura, and it is genuinely close to all of them — Salou is about 15 km and fifteen minutes, at a fixed €45. Tarragona and Cambrils are similarly short hops. The airport is busiest in summer, when charter waves arrive within minutes of each other and the small arrivals hall fills quickly. Barcelona Airport to Reus, if you are connecting between the two, is €155.

Which airport should you fly into?

If your destination is Barcelona itself, El Prat almost always wins: it is 15 km from the centre against 100 km from either alternative. If you are heading for Lloret, Tossa, Blanes or the northern coves, Girona is closer and the transfer is cheaper. If you are going to Salou, Cambrils or PortAventura, Reus is closer. The right comparison is not the airfare alone but the airfare plus the transfer plus the hours of your holiday spent travelling — a €30 cheaper flight into the wrong airport is rarely a saving.

Connecting between airports

Split itineraries are common — arriving into Girona and departing from Barcelona, or flying in to Barcelona and out of Reus. There is no direct public transport between any pair of Catalonia's airports; every route goes through a city centre and a change of station. Girona city: worth stopping for

Girona is one of the most rewarding small cities in Spain — the coloured houses along the Onyar, the walled Força Vella, an intact medieval Jewish quarter and the Game of Thrones staircase everyone photographs. Guests transferring from the airport to the coast often add a two-hour stop in the city, which we quote inside the same fixed price. In the other direction, Girona makes an easy day trip from Barcelona or from the Costa Brava resorts.

Luggage, ski bags and family travel

Low-cost passengers often travel with more hold luggage than they would on a scheduled flight because it was cheaper to check bags than to pay for cabin allowance. Give us the true suitcase count so we send the right vehicle: Economy Sedan for three passengers and three cases, Comfort SUV for four and four, Premium Minivan for seven and seven. Child seats are free and fitted before arrival, which matters even more here because the drive from either airport is longer than a city transfer.
